One of the most Iconic symbols of the region Union Station in Tacoma is a daily reminder to us all of the grand history of our great City.
Construction of Union Station (designed by Reed and Stem’s) began in 1909 and was completed in May 1911. From that day forward the architectural style would impact everyone who viewed it.
This was a time of growth in our City which grew from under 2,000 to almost 40,000 in the 2 decades following the selection of Tacoma as the western end of the northern route of the transcontinental railroad, 1873.
Although the building was an instant classic the use as a rail station declined rapidly when travel by train was replaced with auto travel starting in the 1930’s. Over the next 50 years the build would see major deferred maintenance and would be in disrepair by 1985.
The build has been included on the historic registry and restored to its original grandeur. Now used as a Federal Court house and event space.
